Community Wellness Planning
Community Wellness Planning is a novel service designed by LCI to assist Nations in setting the stage for longterm, sustainable, and meaningful change in community health, happiness, cohesion, and success.
With a specific focus on health, happiness, and cultural revitalization, this service takes a comprehensive approach to “wellness” as defined by the community.
We work with key members of the executive, leadership, and health department to set the stage and ensure ongoing continuity, before bringing in a wider group of staff, community members and external organizations (if necessary) to carry out the full planning processes and delivery.
At a minimum, we ensure Nations meet or exceed the requirements and processes set out by the FNHA Health and Wellness Planning Toolkit for First Nations. At a more comprehensive level, we ensure Nations have the opportunity to look at cultural revitalization, lateral kindness, community cohesion, happiness, safety, employment, and economic opportunity. Often, we are requested to combine this service with comprehensive community planning and leadership mentorship.
The Leo Consulting approach to community wellness and development is based on our cultural teachings, professional training, and decades of experience working in and with First Nations communities.
The overarching intention behind phase 1 is to set the stage for community wellness planning, create immediate results within the administration and to be able to create a proposal and timeline for a fully costed, multi-phase, multi-year, and comprehensive community wellness planning process that will lead to long term community and cultural regeneration for the First Nation.

With over almost a century of combined experience working with First Nations administrations and leadership, federal and provincial governments, and health agencies, our approach and processes to sustainable and effective community engagement and long-term planning is time tested and proven.
FHNA has outlined the 7 Planning Directives and 12 Reporting and Evaluation Standards as follows:
1. Community-Driven, Nation-Based
2. Increase First Nations Decision-Making and Control
3. Improve Services
4. Foster Meaningful Collaboration and Partnership
5. Develop Human and Economic Capacity
6. Be Without Prejudice to First Nations Interests
7. Function at a High Operational Standard
In order to meet these requirements, Leo Consulting proposes to follow a 4-phase approach that begins with “Setting the Stage” for Community Wellness Planning and is followed by the planning and implementation processes, thereafter.
This process is intentionally front-loaded in order to ensure that the intended results as defined by the community and FNHA are met efficiently and risk managed, leading to saved time, expenses and labour in later phases and a plan that delivers the intended results.
LCI’s unique mix of knowledge, skills and experience has led us to develop a suite of workshops, data and information collecting processes and communication practices that improve participant’s knowledge and understanding of wellness and provide the ability to tackle the root causes preventing communities from flourishing.
Phase one is designed to begin the community wellness planning processes with generating immediate results. These immediate results will be achieved through hand selected workshops from our Community Wellness Workshop Series that are informed by background data collection, historical documents and projects review and engagement with the Homalco First Nation’s staff and leadership.
The Community Wellness Workshop Series, as a whole, takes place across (6) main areas of influence that our experience has shown directly impact the fabric of the community and are the key factors for successful change. While only a select few workshops from this series will be applied at the onset of phase 1 in order to properly set the foundations for community wellness programming within the leadership and administration, the overall workshops series is designed to improve the wellness and cohesiveness of First Nation’s by increasing capacity for community wellness and may be applied throughout the subsequent phases.
In order to inform the context, format and participation of the workshops and future phases, to ensure relevance and effectiveness unique to the Homalco Nation, our team will work with department leaders to identify key documents, project information and general community wellness background information that can be shared, without adding a capacity burden to the administration.
